Great book! It is a very interesting read to learn about women's rights over time. The characters are inspiring and well-crafted, especially Maude. Indeed, the thirst for learning of the latter is contagious and its determined character is a model to follow. It's well written and full of beautiful values, I highly recommend.

Behind Dr. Maude

When I visited the Regional Argenteuil Museum, the director, then Lyne St-Jacques, introduced me to Maude Elizabeth Abbott as her favourite character. The pioneer of medicine in Quebec also co-founded the Argenteuil County Historical Society and the Museum. I was immediately seduced by her exceptional career in medicine and her atypical personality. I then formed the plan of writing her story, without daring to formulate it aloud. I had already spoken so many times about my desire to write without completing a project that I cultivated imposter syndrome.

As the Museum's 80th anniversary approached, I expressed my wish to write its co-founder story. I had then co-founded Les célèbres anonymes and written a first children's book. I already felt a little more credible. The Museum offered me its collaboration and opened the doors to consult the archives: newspaper articles, letters, newspaper excerpts, in addition to the artifacts that belonged to Maude Abbott presented in the Museum.

I also consulted McGill Library's and Osler Library's (also at McGill) archives. With the team at the Regional Argenteuil Museum, I visited the Maude Abbott Medical Museum at McGill University. For two years, I read about the history of Maude and medicine, a lot of books and websites. You will find a list of them in this bibliography.

Maude Elizabeth Abbott's International Career and Accomplishments:

  • Co-founder of the International Association of Medical Museums, the Association of Medical Women of Canada, the Regional Argenteuil Museum and the Argenteuil County Historical Society

  • McGill Doctor Honoris Causa in Medicine and Law (first person to earn this double honour at McGill)

  • Only female scientist and only Canadian to be featured on Diego Rivera's mural "History of Cardiology"

  • Recognized as a Historic Person of National Significance by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada and as a Historic Person by the Québec Department of Culture and Communications

  • Only woman among the first 10 inductees into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame

  • Canada Post issues a 46-cent stamp in her honour "The Heart of the Matter" - Mary Bell Eastlake, his friend, is the artist who produced the portrait

  • Finds the malformation that causes the blue baby disease, the first to recommend surgery

  • Publishes around 140 articles and the book "Atlas of Congenital Diseases", which makes her the leading authority on the subject

I invite you to discover the story of Maude Elizabeth Abbott and to spread the knowledge in your turn. Too many exceptional women have fallen into oblivion after their death. We need positive role models of strong and innovative women!
